DENMARK DEMONS FACE ST. CROIX BASE BALL CLUB

For the third time, the Denmark Demons vintage base ball team will try to overcome the Saint Croix Base Ball Club in a game played by 1860s rules Sunday, September 14 at the Denmark Town Hall , 90th and Oakgreen in Denmark Township , south Washington County . The game starts at 1:30 p.m.  The  public is invited to come at 1 p.m. for refreshments such as hot dogs and popcorn plus entertainment by the barbershop quartet "Eight Foot Four."  There is no admission charge. Everyone should bring a folding chair or blanket.

The Saint Croix Base Ball Club is sponsored by the Washington County Historical Society and the Denmark Township Historical Society sponsors the Denmark Demons. Team members play by old rules that define base ball as a "gentleman's game."  Players wear vintage clothing and play without gloves, which were not introduced until 1875. The pitcher throws underhand and delivers the ball to the "striker's" liking. The striker is out when the ball is caught on the fly or on the first bounce. No betting or swearing is allowed. More information is available from the Vintage Base Ball Association ( http://vbba.org/rules/1860.html ).
