| DENMARK TEAM TAKES ON VINTAGE BASE BALL |
| |
The public is invited to an afternoon of vintage base ball, food and
entertainment on Sunday, September 10 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Denmark Town Hall, 90th and Oakgreen
in Denmark Township, south Washington County. The free event features the newly organized Denmark
Demons, sponsored by the Denmark Township Historical Society, facing Washington County Historical
Society's club, the St. Croix Croix Base Ball Club, in a game played by 1860s rules.
|
| . |
| The game starts at 2 p.m. Pre-game entertainment begins at 1 p.m. with music by
Bill Kruschel of Maplewood and a barbershop quartet, the 8 Foot Fours, organized by Bud Urtel of
Woodbury. Refreshments include beverages, hotdogs, ice cream, peanuts and caramel corn will be sold.
Guests should bring their own lawn chairs or blankets. The public is invited. |
| . |
| The event promises to be entertaining and educational. The St. Croix Base Ball
Club (a name preferred to "team") is one of several dozen clubs in the country playing by the 1860s
rules that define base ball as a "gentleman's game." There is no bunting, leading off, betting or
swearing. Balls and strikes are not called. Plays on bases are on the honor system, with the umpire
ruling safe or out only if the baseman and baserunner disagree. The pitcher throws underhand and
delivers the ball to the "striker's" (batter) liking. The striker is out when the ball is caught on
the fly or on the first bound. Players wear vintage clothing and play without gloves, which were not
introduced until 1875. |
| |
| During the seventh inning stretch winning names will be drawn for a raffle of a
handmade afghan created by Denmark Historical Society member JoAnne Olson and for four tickets to a
Twins baseball game. Raffle tickets are being sold for $1. |
| |
| The vintage base ball game is the fifth annual RiverFolk Festival organized by
the Denmark Township Historical Society as a service to the community to celebrate life along the
river and call attention to its mission of preserving traditions, stories, photos and historic
buildings in the township. |
